According to the publication, Schmidt’s stepfather, Christoph S., attacked his mother, Samira, and his 10-year-old half-brother at their home in Eichstetten, Baden-Württemberg. The man fired a shotgun through the door of the child’s bedroom, injuring him. He then went outside, where he continued to behave erratically while still armed.
Police arrived at the scene and, in an attempt to detain the suspect, shot him. Christoph S. was immediately taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Schmidt’s mother and brother received medical treatment and psychological support following the attack. Authorities have stated that the suspect’s motives remain entirely unclear.
It was also noted that Christoph S. had a criminal record, including previous convictions for illegal firearm possession and drug-related offenses.
Kenneth Schmidt attended training the following day, but Freiburg has granted him leave to allow him time to recover from the shocking event.
