In yesterday's match of the seventeenth round of the Premier League, Bournemouth hosted Luton. On the 60th minute, the guest team's player, Tom Locker, fell in the middle of the field, without any contact with an opponent. Players immediately demanded the referee to halt the encounter, calling for medics onto the field. Luton's coach also appeared to support the captain of their team, asking the footballers not to obstruct the work of the medical team.
Both teams' players left the field, and after a few minutes of treatment, the Welsh central defender was placed on a stretcher, covered with a black blanket, and taken through the tunnel amid chants of his name by the fans. He was then transported to the hospital, and after about a 20-minute delay since the game was halted, the match was officially abandoned. Later, it was announced that the match would be replayed at a later date. The Premier League released a brief statement, saying:
"The Premier League match between Bournemouth and Luton Town was interrupted due to a medical incident involving a player. Our thoughts are with Tom Locker and all the players who participated in today's match."
Following this, Luton issued a statement confirming Locker's hospitalization, and roughly 30 minutes later, they posted a message stating that he had experienced a cardiac arrest but was currently in a stable condition.
"Our medical staff confirmed that the Hatters captain suffered a cardiac arrest on the field, but by the time he was taken off on a stretcher, he was already responsive.
He received initial care on the field, for which we once again thank the medical teams from both sides. Tom was taken to the hospital, and we can assure our supporters that his condition is stable, and he is currently undergoing further examinations.
We would like to thank everyone for their support, care, and warm words for Locker."
This is the second similar incident involving Locker. Previously, he lost consciousness on the field during the playoff final in May against Coventry City. It was later revealed that the 29-year-old player suffered from atrial fibrillation, a condition that can cause an irregular or abnormally fast heart rhythm.
Subsequently, he underwent an operation to address this issue and returned to football at the beginning of this season, having been confident in the procedure undertaken.
