Remo Stars goalkeeper Kayode Bankole has expressed confidence that Nigeria will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite the team’s current struggles in Group C of the qualifiers.
Nigeria’s Uphill Battle
The Super Eagles sit in fifth place with just three points from four games, trailing group leaders Rwanda by four points. However, with six matches remaining, Nigeria still has a chance to turn their campaign around.
Bankole, who received his maiden senior call-up, remains positive about the team’s prospects.
“Getting the call-up at this point is something amazing for me, and I know it’s a big start ahead of us because everybody expects Nigeria to qualify for the World Cup,” Bankole told NFF TV.
“I know impossible is nothing and with God on our side, I know it is going to be possible.”
A Surprise Call-Up
Bankole, 22, is one of the unexpected additions to the squad. While he is likely to serve as the third-choice goalkeeper behind Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie, his presence adds depth and motivation to the team.
Despite limited game time this season, Bankole’s inclusion comes as a reward for his consistency, having been named the best goalkeeper in Nigeria’s domestic league for two consecutive seasons.
“I didn’t get the call-up before, but I kept working hard. I knew my time would come, and I’m happy it happened now,” he added.
Crucial Fixtures Ahead
Nigeria faces Rwanda on Friday at the Stade Amahoro before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday.
