Legendary American tennis star Serena Williams will not compete in the doubles draw at Wimbledon 2026. The 23-time Grand Slam champion has announced her withdrawal due to a knee injury, pushing back the highly anticipated return to the court with her sister Venus Williams.
Serena also made her singles comeback at Wimbledon. In her opening-round match, the seven-time Wimbledon champion fell to Australia’s Maya Joint with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 3-6.
Despite her singles defeat, the younger Williams had planned to continue in the doubles event alongside her sister Venus. In the first round, the American duo was set to face Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio.
I’m devastated to withdraw from the doubles tournament. Having the chance to compete again was a true gift, and the opportunity to play alongside Venus once more meant so much to me. I did everything I could, but unfortunately my knee just isn’t ready for the demands of the game,
For the record, the 44-year-old Serena made her professional tennis comeback in June after a 1,375-day break. She first appeared at a tournament in London, where, paired with Canadian Victoria Mboko, she won her opening match, but their run ended after her partner suffered an injury. Later, the American played in Berlin with Karolina Muchova but bowed out in the first round.
