Mexico’s head coach Javier Aguirre steps down with pride, but once again the team is left heartbroken.
Details: The Mexico national team ended their 2026 World Cup campaign after a 3-2 defeat to England in the Round of 16.
After the match, Javier Aguirre made it clear that he was leaving his post as national team manager. The coach admitted he had hoped to bid farewell to Mexican fans with a victory, but emphasized that the players should walk away with their heads held high.
According to Reuters, Rafa Márquez is set to become the next head coach of Mexico. The former national team captain and ex-Barcelona defender has already worked on Aguirre’s staff and is now preparing to take over the top job.
Aguirre himself endorsed his successor, stating that Márquez is more than capable of handling the position—and might even surpass him.
It’s worth noting that this was Aguirre’s third stint at the helm of the Mexican national team. He previously led the squad to the World Cup playoffs in 2002 and 2010.
Reminder: An England star suffered a serious injury while celebrating the victory over Mexico.
