The playoff clash for a spot in Sweden’s top division between Norrköping and Örgryte will go down in history as one of the most drawn-out and controversial. The second and decisive leg lasted over four and a half hours, twice interrupted due to chaos instigated by the fans.
Details: The disorder erupted five minutes before the end of regulation time with the score locked at 0-0, as Norrköping supporters—frustrated by the way the tie was unfolding (having lost the first leg 0-3)—vented their anger on the pitch. Pyrotechnics set fire to the artificial turf and the goal net, forcing the referee to halt play immediately and call for emergency services.
After an extended break to extinguish the fire and restore safety, the match resumed. But just 50 seconds later, the referee was forced to blow the whistle again as more flares were launched, prompting the evacuation of the fan sector.
Ultimately, the final whistle sounded a full four and a half hours after kickoff. Despite the extreme circumstances and marathon delays, Örgryte held on to their aggregate lead, finishing the two-legged tie 3-0 and sealing their return to the Swedish top flight after several seasons in the lower tier.
For Norrköping, the defeat was a double blow: not only did they miss out on promotion, but they now also face the prospect of severe disciplinary sanctions.
