Guillermo “Pol” Fernández has brought his stint at Fortaleza to an early end. After just six months in Brazil, the 33-year-old midfielder terminated his contract and is now a free agent, paving the way for a possible return to Argentine football.
Fernández struggled to secure a regular spot under coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda. He played 25 matches, registered three assists, and failed to score. His form dipped, and his absence from key Copa Libertadores and league matches ultimately led to a mutual separation.
Now on the market, several teams have shown interest. Vélez Sarsfield, managed by Guillermo Barros Schelotto, is reportedly keen to bring him in for their Libertadores campaign. There’s also been interest from Mexican clubs, while both Boca Juniors and Racing are rumored to be monitoring his situation, though no formal offers have surfaced.
At this stage in his career, Fernández faces a decisive choice. With past spells at Boca, Racing, and Cruz Azul, he now stands at a crossroads: return to familiar ground in Argentina or seek one more challenge abroad. His next move could shape the final stretch of his professional journey.
