Martín Palermo is no longer the head coach of Paraguayan giants Olimpia, following a heavy 4-0 defeat to Vélez Sarsfield in the second round of the Copa Libertadores group stage, according to ABC Color. The result sealed a downward spiral of six winless matches, including two consecutive losses in the continental competition.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Palermo hinted he would discuss his future with the club’s leadership. Shortly after, Olimpia’s board, led by president Rodrigo Nogués, confirmed his departure. The Argentine coach had taken over in February 2024, and though he won the 2024 Clausura, inconsistency plagued his second season.
During his tenure, Palermo managed 58 games, registering 27 wins, 17 draws, and 14 defeats. His side scored 77 goals while conceding 54, finishing with a win percentage of 56 percent. Despite delivering a domestic title, recent performances and mounting fan frustration culminated in his exit. The home crowd at Defensores del Chaco made their displeasure clear with boos and whistles following the latest loss.
In the wake of Palermo’s dismissal, Aureliano Torres has been named interim head coach. He will be joined by assistant Luis Alberto Monzón. Torres had already led the team temporarily during the previous managerial transition and will now oversee Olimpia’s next league match against Sportivo Ameliano in Matchweek 13 of the Apertura. The club hopes the Paraguayan can steady the ship as they search for a permanent replacement.
