Ortiz Uncertain About Future at Santos After Dismal Clausura Campaign

Santos Laguna’s nightmare Clausura 2025 continued with a 2-0 loss to Pumas, leaving the team at the bottom of the table with just seven points. With one match remaining and no chance of advancing, head coach Fernando Ortiz admitted he may step down, according to Infobae.
Ortiz, in his first tournament with Santos, has recorded 13 defeats and just two wins. “I don’t know if Sunday will be my last match,” he stated. “If I am the one who needs to go for the good of the club, I will step aside. I’ve always said that.”
Santos’ struggles are not new. In the Apertura 2024, they also finished last with just 10 points. Now, even that modest tally seems out of reach unless they win their final game against Tijuana. The team has lacked cohesion on both ends of the pitch, with a porous defense and ineffective attack characterizing the campaign.
Ortiz’s tenure was meant to mark a turning point after Ignacio Ambriz’s disappointing run. Instead, the team has regressed further. With one match left, Santos’ immediate objective is to avoid setting a new club low in the short tournament era.
As pressure mounts and fans grow impatient, the club’s leadership must decide whether to continue with Ortiz or initiate another change in search of long-overdue stability.
