Legendary central defender Pepe will no longer play for Porto next season, as officially announced by the club's new president, André Villas-Boas.
"Regarding the extension of Pepe's contract as a Porto player, this will not happen. The reasons why this unfortunately cannot happen have been well explained to him. We hold his career in the highest respect," Villas-Boas was quoted as saying by A Bola.
The 41-year-old Pepe played for Porto from 2002 to 2004 and returned to the club in January 2019 after a successful decade at Real Madrid and a season and a half at Beşiktaş. In total, Pepe made 288 appearances for the "Dragons" and scored 17 goals.
Last season, Pepe became the oldest outfield player in Champions League history at 41 years and 15 days.
It is currently unknown whether Pepe plans to continue his career at another club.
Additionally, Pepe has traveled with the Portuguese national team to Euro 2024, where he might play in today's first group stage match against the Czechia.
