One of the most dramatic twists of this transfer window has ended in nothing. The Dutch defender was already in Rome, one signature away from the move, but the deal has spectacularly fallen apart.

Details: According to Fabrizio Romano, Jayden Oosterwolde's transfer to AS Roma has collapsed after extra medical tests, and the defender returns to Fenerbahçe. The clubs had agreed a season-long loan worth €1 million with a €15 million obligation to buy under certain conditions.

The saga lasted several days and ended in the most painful way for all parties. Oosterwolde, 25, landed in the Italian capital on Tuesday and underwent examinations at the Campus Biomedico clinic, but the tests raised concerns over a muscular issue that could even require surgery. Roma paused the deal, requested additional evaluations and tried to reopen the terms with Fenerbahçe, but the extra tests proved decisive in the worst possible sense. Gian Piero Gasperini had been counting on the Dutchman as an option both at left-back and in central defence, and personal terms on a contract worth €1.6 million per year had long been agreed. Oosterwolde joined Fenerbahçe from Parma in January 2023 and is tied to the Istanbul club until June 2028, so he now returns to Turkey, where the transfer window remains open longer. The Giallorossi, meanwhile, must look for alternatives in the final days of the market.

For Fenerbahçe this is an unexpected reinforcement for free, as the club had already lined up defensive cover. It's worth noting that the Istanbul side today reached an agreement to sign Ghanaian defender Kojo Oppong from Nice, while Roma, who opened their Serie A campaign with a 4:0 demolition of Fiorentina, visit Lecce on Sunday.
