Here we go! Bayern releases star midfielder to Portuguese giants
João Palhinha is on the verge of returning to his home league after stints in Germany and England.
Details: According to renowned journalist and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano on his X social media page, Lisbon’s Benfica has reached a verbal agreement with Bayern Munich for the permanent transfer of the 31-year-old defensive midfielder. The deal is valued at €14 million, with up to €5 million in potential add-ons.
The clubs are set to exchange documents within the next 24 hours, with the direct involvement of Benfica president Rui Costa, pending Palhinha’s final approval.
It’s worth noting that a move to Aston Villa previously fell through for the player: the Birmingham club was hoping for a loan deal, but Bayern insisted on a permanent sale.
Palhinha has been under contract with Bayern since 2024, but spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Tottenham, appearing in 33 Premier League matches, scoring 5 goals and providing 2 assists. The reputable portal Transfermarkt currently values the midfielder at €15 million.
