Criticism of the modern football calendar, particularly the expanded Club World Cup, is growing and now even has scientific backing.

Details: A report from Belgium's Leuven University, commissioned by the global players’ union FIFPRO, claims that modern football breaches labor laws on both European and global levels, with the Club World Cup singled out as a major issue.

Quote: "It’s striking how labor standards are sometimes overlooked in the world of sports. From a labor law perspective, the most logical conclusion is to recognize professional footballers as workers, and labor standards should apply to them both nationally and internationally," said Frank Hendrick, director of the Institute for Labor Law at Leuven University, during a video call (quoted by Inside World Football).

Reminder: FIFPRO and the European Leagues organization have previously filed complaints against FIFA with the European Commission, arguing that FIFA exploits a monopoly over global football.
