Maxi Gómez Transfer Delayed as Defensor Awaits Further Bids

Maximiliano Gómez’s future remains uncertain as Defensor Sporting has decided to hold off on accepting Peñarol’s offer, opting instead to wait for additional bids. According to club president Diego Franzini, the proposal from Peñarol is reportedly valued around $400,000 for a share of the player’s rights, but the board agreed Thursday night to keep all options on the table.
“The situation has gotten quite tangled, especially with various public statements that haven’t brought much clarity,” Franzini told De fútbol se habla así on DSports. He noted that while there wasn’t outright “annoyance,” the interest from Nacional and the manner of their approach did catch the club off guard.
Gómez, a 28-year-old striker from Paysandú, has a $200,000 release clause, but it only applies to offers from foreign clubs—several of which have shown interest. For now, Defensor is prioritizing financial stability. Franzini explained that the club’s economic situation has been “stressful and overwhelming” since the new board took over just 16 days ago.
Meanwhile, a meeting is expected soon between Franzini and Nacional’s vice president, Flavio Perchman, who has reportedly already secured a personal agreement with the player. While a resolution is anticipated in the coming days, Defensor is carefully weighing all factors before greenlighting Gómez’s next move.
