Tena, After Surprising Guatemala Victory: “It’s Not Luck Anymore, It’s Hard Work”

Luis Fernando Tena was visibly emotional after Guatemala’s dramatic win over Canada in the 2025 Gold Cup quarterfinals. The 6-5 penalty shootout victory secured Guatemala’s first semifinal appearance since 1996, a milestone that the Mexican coach celebrated with tears and heartfelt words.
“This isn’t luck anymore. It’s hard work, effort, unity,” said Tena in his post-match press conference. “We believe in ourselves, and we’ll keep growing. The group is committed, hungry, and determined to make our people proud. That’s our fuel. That’s our dream.”
The coach praised the passionate support of Guatemalan fans. “They said there wouldn’t be many, but they came in numbers and made themselves heard. Hearing the anthem, seeing the players give their all... It’s impossible not to get emotional.”
Despite being underdogs on paper, Tena credited the team’s emotional resilience for the upset. “We knew if we played with heart, we had a chance. Staying focused, avoiding provocations, and keeping our composure were key.”
Guatemala now prepares to face the United States in the semifinals, with renewed belief and the backing of a country that dreams big.
