FIFA and the World Trade Organization have published a joint study assessing the socio-economic impact of two major football tournaments: the 2025 Club World Cup and the 2026 World Cup. Both tournaments will be held in the USA and are predicted to significantly impact both the American and global economies.
An analysis conducted by the independent organization OpenEconomics shows that the 2026 World Cup could attract 6.5 million fans and contribute up to $40.9 billion to the global GDP. It is expected to create nearly 824,000 jobs worldwide. In the USA, the tournament could generate approximately 185,000 jobs and $17.2 billion in GDP.
As for the 2025 Club World Cup, it will feature the 32 best clubs on the planet. It is expected that 3.7 million fans will gather in 11 cities across the USA. This tournament could add $21.1 billion to the global GDP, including $9.6 billion to the US economy, and create over 100,000 jobs.
The studies used the methodology of evaluating the social return on investment and data from organizations such as the World Bank, OECD, ILO, UN, and others. As a result, FIFA expects these tournaments to be not only a football celebration but also a significant economic driver.
