Paraguay faced the United States in their opening Group Stage match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and found themselves on the wrong side of an unwanted piece of history.
Details: The United States took the lead early in the match thanks to an own goal. Paraguay defender Damián Bobadilla inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, handing the hosts the advantage. To make matters worse, it was the first own goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In addition, according to MisterChip (Alexis), Bobadilla became only the second Paraguayan player to score an own goal in World Cup history.
Meanwhile, Hollywood actor Tom Cruise was spotted among the spectators, having attended the match to cheer on his favourite national team in its tournament opener.
Reminder: Ahead of Brazil’s opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, one of the biggest questions surrounding the team was whether Neymar would recover in time to feature in the game.
