The Ottawa Senators hockey club has announced the resignation of head coach DJ Smith, as reported on the team's website.

In addition to the head coach, assistant coach Davis Payne has also been relieved of his duties. The rest of the coaching staff remains in place. Jacques Martin will temporarily assume the responsibilities of the head coach. Furthermore, former longtime captain and franchise leader in points, Daniel Alfredsson, will join Martin's staff as an assistant coach. Martin will return to the Ottawa Senators' bench when the team faces the Arizona Coyotes on Tuesday.

DJ Smith is a Canadian professional hockey coach and former player. As a player, he appeared in 45 NHL games for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Avalanche as a defenseman. As a coach, Smith won the Memorial Cup in 2015 and spent four years as an assistant with the Toronto Maple Leafs before joining the Senators.

In the current season, Ottawa is at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. In 26 games, the Senators have accumulated 22 points. In their latest match, they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights with a score of 3-6. Overall, in the last five games, there has been only one win and four losses for the Senators.
