VIDEO. 11 years ago, Dortmund defeated Real in UEFA Champions League 4-1. Lewandowski scored 4 goals
Today, fans are anticipating one of the biggest matches of the year. In the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, Borussia Dortmund will face Real Madrid.
While this is not the first encounter between these teams, fans vividly remember their clash in the 2012/13 Champions League semifinals. Both teams were drawn into the same group and advanced to the knockout stage, with Dortmund topping the group. Borussia Dortmund defeated Los Blancos 2-1 in Germany, and the second match ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw.
Following successful performances in the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals, the teams met again in the semifinals.
The first leg took place in Germany on April 24, where Robert Lewandowski scored four goals against Real Madrid, making a strong case for Dortmund's place in the final. The Spaniards could only reply with a single goal from Cristiano Ronaldo.
In the return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid felt more confident and, thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos, won the match. However, their two goals were not enough to overcome the aggregate score, and Borussia Dortmund secured their place in the final.
The 2012/13 Champions League final, also held at Wembley, saw Borussia Dortmund face Bayern Munich. It was Dortmund's second final in history, but they lost the match.
Highlighting the line-ups from those semifinal matches, Borussia Dortmund featured many renowned players, with Mats Hummels and Marco Reus still playing for the German club. Ilkay Gündoğan and Robert Lewandowski continue to face Real Madrid, but now as players for Barcelona.
Real Madrid also had a star-studded team, though only Luka Modric and Nacho (who did not play in that match) remain from that era. Club legends like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Karim Benzema, and Angel Di Maria have since moved on to other clubs or retired. Notably, Xabi Alonso, who troubled Dortmund on the pitch that season, is now a successful coach for the current German champions.
Additionally, it's worth mentioning the managers who led the teams during that period. Real Madrid was coached by José Mourinho, who left the club after that season. Borussia Dortmund was under the guidance of Jürgen Klopp, who moved to Liverpool two years later and became a legendary manager for the club, leaving Anfield this year after nine years.
