In the second round of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Gabon faced off against Mozambique. Almost immediately, Mozambique stunned their opponents with two early goals and led 2-0, but the Gabonese side managed to reduce the deficit right before halftime thanks to a goal from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. That strike turned out to be historic.
Details: In the 45+5th minute, the 36-year-old forward found the back of the net, reigniting the intrigue in the match—not only with a crucial goal but also with a record-breaking achievement. Aubameyang became the second-oldest goal scorer in AFCON history—at the moment of scoring, he was 36 years and 6 months old.
The record still belongs to Egypt’s Hossam Hassan, who scored in the tournament at the age of 39 years and 5 months.
Aubameyang’s goal became a turning point of the first half and kept Gabon’s hopes alive for a positive result against Mozambique.
Reminder: Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi has recovered and is ready to play against Zambia.
