History: Mozambique Claim Historic First Africa Cup of Nations Win In Decades Beating Gabon 3-2
Mozambique made history at the AFCON 2025 on Sunday with a thrilling 3–2 victory over Gabon in their Group F clash in Agadir, marking the Mambas’ first-ever Africa Cup of Nations win.
After going 16 AFCON matches without a victory, Mozambique took the lead in the 37th minute when Faizal Bangal headed in a fine cross from Geny Catamo. Five minutes later, Catamo doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after Dominguês was fouled in the box.
Gabon pulled one back through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in first-half stoppage time, but Mozambique restored their two-goal lead early in the second half as Diogo Calila nodded home from Witi’s precise cross.
A late goal from Alex Moucketou-Moussounda set up a tense finish, but Mozambique held on to secure a landmark win, ending nearly 40 years of waiting for an AFCON victory.
