The biggest corporate backbone in German football is under threat: Volkswagen may pull out of the game completely.

Details: According to Bild, a VW Supervisory Board resolution within the newly approved Future Plan 2030 states that equity stakes in football clubs are generally not part of the target model for 2030. The car giant owns VfL Wolfsburg outright and its Audi arm holds a minority stake in Bayern Munich.

The timing could hardly be more dramatic for Wolfsburg. The club was relegated from the Bundesliga in May for the first time since 1997, losing a playoff to Paderborn, and now faces the unthinkable: life without the company that built it. VW reportedly pumps around €90 million a year into the club, a lifeline that has underpinned everything from the Volkswagen Arena to the 2009 title. The wider plan is brutal in scope: around 100,000 jobs could go and four German plants face closure as the group battles crises in China and the US. Any sale would also reignite the eternal 50+1 debate, with fans already anxious about outside investors circling a club suddenly stripped of its patron.

It's worth noting that VW's ties to Wolfsburg date back to the club's very origins as a factory workers' team in 1945, making this potential divorce one of the most symbolic in football history.

Reminder: Price shock! Manchester United cool their Balde pursuit.
