High Hopes, Low Returns: Estudiantes’ 2025 Signings Fail to Deliver in First Semester

Estudiantes La Plata made waves during the 2025 transfer window with seven new signings meant to elevate the squad’s level in local and international competition. Yet, as the first half of the year comes to a close, the results have been largely underwhelming. According to Infocielo, only Cristian Medina has consistently lived up to expectations, while the rest have struggled with form, injuries, or adaptation.
Medina, who arrived from Boca Juniors, initially looked off pace but gradually became a standout performer—particularly in key Libertadores fixtures. Defender Santiago Núñez offered glimpses of solidity but was also involved in some costly mistakes, making his impact mixed at best.
Facundo Farías played limited minutes, yet his flashes of quality hinted at significant upside. Ezequiel Piovi started well and scored a memorable goal against Universidad de Chile, but a mid-season injury stalled his momentum. Alexis Castro also battled injury setbacks, showing promise in brief spells but failing to build rhythm.
Lucas Alario, perhaps the most high-profile addition, has been a major disappointment. He scored only once—via penalty—and struggled to create opportunities. Still, his experience keeps him in contention for a revival. Ramiro Funes Mori, however, was clearly the weakest link, underperforming in all appearances and exacerbating an already shaky defense.
With the Copa Argentina and Libertadores still ongoing, Estudiantes will need more from their reinforcements to salvage the season. The upcoming mid-year break could prove crucial in determining whether these investments were temporary missteps or part of a longer-term plan that just needs more time to click.
