Herediano Hold Firm as Alajuelense Dominate Scoreless First Leg

Alajuelense controlled most of the action at the Estadio Nacional, but couldn’t break down a disciplined Herediano side. As reported by ESPN, the 0–0 draw in the first leg of Costa Rica’s grand final leaves the door open for Herediano to chase their 31st league title at home.
The atmosphere was electric: a packed stadium, predominantly red-and-black fans, and relentless rain that sped up the game on a slick surface. Alajuelense pushed forward from the start, seeking control and chances, but ran into a well-organized Herediano defense marshaled by Sergio Rodríguez and anchored in midfield by a strong performance from Yeltsin Tejeda.
Despite consistent pressure down the left flank with Ronald Matarrita, the Liga lacked finishing precision. Coach Jafet Soto’s Herediano chose to sit back and counter selectively, prioritizing structure over possession. In the second half, Alajuelense brought on attacking options like Joel Campbell and Joshua Navarro, but still couldn’t find a breakthrough. Herediano, meanwhile, offered little in attack and focused on preserving the draw.
Now, with everything to play for, Herediano will return home with a golden chance to lift their 31st trophy.
