The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Gabon on March 23 and Gambia on March 20 will see the Harambee Stars step up their preparations. In an attempt to lead Kenya to the largest platform in football, newly hired head coach Benni McCarthy has invigorated the team.
McCarthy’s Vision for Harambee Stars
Kenya Police forward Mohamed Bajaber, one of the local players called up for the provisional squad, has shared insights into McCarthy’s approach. “We need young blood—young players with fresh legs,” Bajaber said. “The coach believes in us, and even if not now, in the future, these young stars will represent the nation.”
Bajaber also praised the intensity of training sessions under McCarthy. “Training has been good—intense—and the coach has ambition, which is a good thing. He’s always clear about his expectations, and I believe the future looks bright for Kenya.”
Rising Stars and Squad Development
Bajaber’s inclusion in the squad follows his impressive form for Kenya Police. The midfielder recently scored a brace in a 3-1 victory over Murang’a Seal, helping his club maintain their lead at the top of the FKF Premier League table.
McCarthy, who was officially unveiled as Kenya’s head coach on March 3, has been closely monitoring local league matches to identify talent. His first three-day training camp, held from March 12-14, focused primarily on local-based players.
Iran-based Antony Akumu joined the squad on the final day of training, while the remaining players, including international call-ups, are expected to report to camp on March 17.
