The Italian national team faced Switzerland in the Round of 16 of Euro 2024. The Azzurri entered the match as the reigning European champions.

Luciano Spalletti's squad had a dismal first half, with the Swiss appearing more organized and threatening, increasingly challenging Donnarumma's goal. Only the goalkeeper's confident performance kept the Italians from conceding.

However, in the 37th minute, Freuler managed to beat the PSG keeper, putting Switzerland ahead. The teams went into halftime with Switzerland holding a narrow lead.

The start of the second half was a shock for the Azzurri, as Vargas doubled the Swiss lead with a stunning long-range strike.

Recovering from the setback, Italy began to play more offensively and created several dangerous chances but failed to mount a comeback.

Thus, the Euro 2020 champions were eliminated from Euro 2024 in the Round of 16.

In the quarterfinals, Switzerland will face the winner of the England vs. Slovakia match.
