Former Bafana Bafana coach Owen Da Gama calls for better supply for the strikers at the World Cup
Former Bafana Bafana coach Owen Da Gama has come out in defence for the national team striker's doing duty at the World Cup currently underway in Mexico, USA and Canada.
Iqraam Rayners, Lyle Foster and Evidence Makgopa lead Hugo Broos' frontline but the trio are yet to find the back of the net in both matches against Mexico and Czechia.
Bafana lost to Mexico and drew against Czechia where Teboho Mokoena scored from the penalty spot.
Speaking to Radio 2000's Sports Show, Da Gama said the three strikers play different roles at club level which is detrimental to their national display.
“I think if you look at Sundowns, when they play, even in the Champions League, they have Leon, international striker playing there,” said Da Gama in the interview.
“Iqraam was an impact player at Sundowns but he has done very well for them.
“I still believe we still haven’t that prolific striker, I think the coach has tried his best. I think Makgopa has done well, Rayners has given his best, Lyle Foster has given his best.
“But I don’t think we have hit the right notes there so far. Hopefully, in the next match, we can show more composure and also a better supply for the strikers.
“There was a number of long balls against Mexico and Rayners gave his best. But there was no clear-cut chances where he could score.”
Bafana face South Korea on Thursday in their last Group A match.
The game starts at 3am South African time.
