Fiorentina player Edoardo Bove, who collapsed on the pitch during a recent Serie A match, faces the possibility of being banned from playing in Italy, according to Gazzetta dello Sport. The reason for this is that the midfielder may need to have a defibrillator implanted to regulate his heart function.
In Italy, the rules strictly prohibit athletes with pacemakers from participating in professional sports. A similar restriction affected Danish player Christian Eriksen, who had a defibrillator fitted after collapsing on the pitch during Euro 2020.
At the time, Eriksen was playing for Inter Milan, and as a result, he was forced to leave the Italian club and move to England, where the rules are less restrictive.
It is believed that Bove's heart stoppage may have been caused by myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), which often develops after illnesses such as the flu or gastrointestinal infections. If athletes return to sports too soon after such illnesses, it can lead to the development of myocarditis.
