Jorge Jesus has finally spoken out following Cristiano Ronaldo's decision to retire from international football.

Details: Speaking to Portuguese broadcaster Canal 11, the national team head coach paid an emotional tribute to the 41-year-old legend, admitting that he had personally asked Ronaldo to continue representing Portugal. Jesus also revealed an unusual gesture he had made to ensure that Cristiano would remain an inspiration to the country's younger players.

“Cristiano is a global icon, an example for Portugal and the national team. I had a huge photo of him put up in our auditorium so that all the young players could look up to him every single day. I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side. But I have to accept his decision. He will always have a place in the hearts of the Portuguese people. He will always be an icon of Portuguese football,” Jesus said.

The statement comes after a turbulent period in the relationship between the two Portuguese football icons. Ronaldo previously left the national team camp following a disagreement with Jesus over his playing time. According to Portuguese media, the striker later informed federation president Pedro Proença of his retirement without personally notifying the head coach.

It's worth noting that Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in August 2003 and ends his international career with 234 appearances and 146 goals. He also helped his country win Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
