FIFA Sparks Controversy by Awarding Club World Cup Playoff to LAFC’s Home Stadium

FIFA has reportedly decided that the playoff match between Club América and Los Angeles FC for the final spot in the 2025 Club World Cup will be held at BMO Stadium, LAFC’s home ground. According to FOX Sports journalist Rubén Rodríguez, the decision has infuriated América’s board, which had requested a neutral venue.
FIFA’s rationale is that a neutral stadium might overwhelmingly favor Club América in terms of fan attendance, given the club’s large following across the U.S. Hosting the game at LAFC’s stadium, the organization argues, would help "balance crowd support"—a justification that has been met with skepticism and backlash from América’s leadership.
The playoff will determine Concacaf’s final representative for the expanded 32-team Club World Cup to be held in the United States in 2025. The high-stakes match is scheduled for Saturday, May 31, with the kickoff time still to be announced.
In the meantime, Club América is focused on their domestic campaign and preparing to face Cruz Azul in the Clausura 2025 semifinals. Despite their frustration, André Jardine’s side is chasing dual goals: a league title and a place on the global stage next year.
