FIFA is planning changes to football regulations and aims to introduce the Football Video Support (FVS) system. This time, the changes will affect coaches.
Details: According to ESPN, this system was used this year at the U20 and U17 Women's World Cups and has been approved for testing by the International Football Association Board (IFAB). FVS allows coaches to make up to two challenges per match if they believe a mistake has been made.
Former FIFA referee Pierluigi Collina explained what to expect from the implementation of this system.
Quote: "It's important to clearly understand that FVS is not VAR, especially in terms of expectations. It can be implemented in leagues with limited resources, where no more than four cameras are used for broadcasting. Due to the limited number of cameras, FVS won’t offer the same capabilities as VAR.
For example, in the case of an offside, only obvious offsides can be spotted without properly positioned cameras. Therefore, the referee's decision on the field remains very important," said Collina.
The FVS system differs from VAR in that, after a request from a team’s coach, the referee alone decides whether their initial assessment was correct. VAR does not intervene in this process.
Reminder: FIFA recently announced the date and location for the draw of the 2025 Club World Cup.
