James Rodríguez could be heading for one of the most unexpected moves of his career.

Details: According to renowned Italian transfer insider Gianluca Di Marzio, Serie B side Avellino are seriously pushing to sign the 35-year-old Colombian playmaker. The club intend to submit a formal proposal to Rodríguez's representatives by the evening of September 9 in an attempt to determine whether the financial terms and sporting project can be accepted.

Rodríguez has been a free agent since July following the end of his latest spell in MLS, meaning Avellino would not have to negotiate a transfer fee with another club. Di Marzio reports that the Italian side have already begun working on the financial structure required to make such an ambitious deal possible.

Since last Friday, Avellino have reportedly involved their technical sponsor, commercial partners and marketing department in the operation. There has also been an initial positive signal from the player's side, with Rodríguez open to evaluating the opportunity. His Spanish passport would allow him to be registered in Serie B.

No agreement has been signed at this stage, so the formal offer will be the key next step in the negotiations. It is worth noting that Sky Sport credits Rodríguez with 24 trophies during a career that has taken him to some of the biggest clubs in European and South American football.
