Faitelson Reports Julen Lopetegui to Take Over at Monterrey for Club World Cup

Julen Lopetegui will take over as head coach of Monterrey for the upcoming Club World Cup, according to TUDN. In his show Faitelson sin Censura, journalist David Faitelson confirmed that the Spanish manager has reached an agreement with the Liga MX club and will replace current coach Martín Demichelis after the conclusion of the Clausura 2025 tournament.
The arrangement includes finalizing Demichelis' contract following Monterrey’s participation in the Play-In or Liguilla stages. “Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui will lead Monterrey at the Club World Cup this summer,” Faitelson revealed. He added that both parties are working on a smooth transition.
There remains a hypothetical scenario that could delay the change: a championship title for Monterrey under Demichelis. However, Faitelson dismissed this outcome, arguing that the team lacks consistency and excitement, despite being the reigning runners-up and recently defeating Club América.
Interestingly, Lopetegui was previously linked with Mexican football. Years ago, Chivas attempted to hire him when José Luis Higuera oversaw the club’s sporting operations.
By bringing in a European coach with international experience, Monterrey aims to elevate its performance and ambitions ahead of the highly anticipated global tournament.
