Fair call from the referee? The official initially awarded a penalty to Germany, but overturned it after VAR review
The second half of the Germany vs Ecuador clash at the World Cup kicked off with refereeing drama and a crucial VAR intervention.
Details: Barely had the teams returned from the locker rooms when, in the 48th minute, American referee Tori Penso decisively pointed to the spot, awarding Germany a penalty for Kai Havertz being brought down in the box. The German side had a golden opportunity to extend their lead, but Julian Nagelsmann’s men didn’t have long to celebrate.
While Ecuadorian players passionately protested the decision, VAR officials began a meticulous review of the build-up to Germany’s attack. As it turned out, at the very start of the move, German winger Leroy Sané committed a foul with a rough challenge on Ecuador’s Vite.
After watching the replay at the pitchside monitor, the referee acknowledged her initial error and overturned the penalty awarded to Germany. Instead of a potential goal for Die Mannschaft, play resumed with a dangerous free kick for the South Americans.
As of the 53rd minute, the score remains level at 1-1.
