The US Open has lost its main attraction nine days before the start.

Details: World number one Jannik Sinner has announced that he will miss the 2026 US Open as he needs more time to recover from a right knee injury. The Italian has not played since Wimbledon and also skipped the Cincinnati Masters, admitting he is very sad and disappointed.

Sinner was due to return to New York as a former champion: he lifted the trophy in 2024 and lost last year's final to Carlos Alcaraz. In 2026 the Italian played only three Grand Slams, winning Wimbledon, and his withdrawal leaves Alcaraz as the overwhelming favorite for the title at Flushing Meadows.

The main draw of the season's final Grand Slam kicks off on August 30, with the men's final scheduled for September 13. It's worth noting that this will be the first US Open since 2023 to take place without Sinner in the draw, and the tournament has now lost the world's best player two editions after he last lifted the trophy there.

Reminder: Unexpected! Real Madrid winger could be heading to Milan.
