Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has revealed that his focus remains firmly on the long-term goal of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. Speaking to EFE, the Spanish-Danish manager explained that star midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla was left out of the current squad to preserve his physical condition ahead of the crucial September qualifiers.

“We're looking ahead. In September, we play for everything, and we need everyone at full strength,” Christiansen stated. Carrasquilla, who was named CONCACAF Player of the Year for the 2023–2024 season, remains a vital piece for Panama, but his early return for the Gold Cup was deemed too risky.

The coach emphasized that the team’s tactical structure remains intact, and the current situation opens the door for new players to prove themselves. “When we’re missing someone, it’s a chance for others to step up and show they can meet the demands,” he noted.

Panama will face Belize this Saturday in Belmopan, followed by a home fixture against Nicaragua in Panama City. Christiansen cautioned that both opponents could pose problems, recalling recent scares against Montserrat and Guyana.

Despite acknowledging a home-field advantage on synthetic turf, he stressed that performance will determine the outcome. The squad is currently made up of 25 players, with defender Andrés Andrade expected to join by June 8.

While the Gold Cup, held from June 14 to July 6 in the U.S., remains important, Christiansen made it clear: September’s qualifiers are the true priority.
