Captain takes a pause. Edmonton Oilers set sights on extending McDavid's contract

Edmonton Oilers general manager Stan Bowman has declared that extending Connor McDavid’s contract is the club’s top priority. The captain’s current deal expires in the summer of 2026, and starting July 1, he will be eligible to sign a new agreement.
“Connor is the best player in the league, our leader, our captain. He deserves our respect for his time and decision,” Bowman emphasized, adding that the club is ready to begin negotiations whenever the player feels prepared.
McDavid has stated that he’ll take a pause to discuss his future with his family and agent. His main focus remains chasing the Stanley Cup—the only major trophy that has eluded him in his ten years with the Oilers.
Last season, he racked up 100 points in the regular season and added 33 more in the playoffs, where Edmonton once again reached the Stanley Cup Final, but for the second year running fell short against the Florida Panthers.
