On Wednesday, April 8, a massive fire broke out at the Barra da Tijuca Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro, where the junior and cadet fencing world championships are currently taking place.
Details: According to TV Prefeito, the blaze started at 4:17 a.m. local time in the Velodrome building. Around 60 firefighters and more than 20 pieces of specialized equipment were deployed to battle the flames, but despite the rescuers’ efforts, the fire managed to destroy a significant portion of the arena’s roof.
Fortunately, no one was injured as the venue was empty when the fire started. Nevertheless, the incident has cast doubt on the continuation of the championship. Organizers had to urgently relocate all scheduled matches to the neighboring Carioca arena. Originally, this venue was only supposed to host the knockout rounds, but now it will serve as the main stage for all phases of the competition.
Despite this emergency, officials announced that the tournament would proceed without long-term interruptions. Group stage bouts at the new location kicked off on time as per the original schedule, though participants were warned about possible changes due to the increased demand on a single arena.
