Tensions are boiling over at Atlas. As reported by Mediotiempo, furious fans took their protests to the extreme by leaving a pig’s head next to photos of club president Aníbal Fájer and manager Gonzalo Pineda, after the club’s abrupt decision to part ways with Hugo Martín Nervo.
The Argentine defender, a fan favorite and former captain, was released with six months left on his contract. The move, made to free up a foreign player slot for incoming Spaniard Róber Pier, was unanimously approved by the club’s executive committee, which includes José Riestra, Alejandro Irarragorri, and Eduardo Herrera.
Nervo, who played a central role in Atlas’ 2021-22 championship run, expressed disappointment. “Leaving was not part of my plan,” he said, hinting at a lack of transparency in how the situation was handled.
The fanbase, already frustrated by poor results in recent seasons, erupted over the perceived disrespect toward a club icon. Chants and online criticism were followed by the pig’s head stunt—a powerful symbol of betrayal among football ultras.
With the Apertura 2025 approaching, the message is clear: if results don’t improve quickly, the pressure on Atlas’ leadership will only intensify.
