Sheffield United defender Anel Ahmedhodzic has become a central figure in recent news due to a controversial situation with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.
Details: Born in Malmö, Ahmedhodzic represented Sweden at all youth levels and even played for the senior team in a friendly match against Moldova. However, he later decided to represent Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Since his decision in 2020, the Sheffield United player and the Bosnian national team have been surrounded by drama. In the past, he was accused of ignoring at least one national team call-up.
During the latest international break, Ahmedhodzic left the squad, citing an injury that the team’s medical staff did not consider serious. This led to a major conflict, and Bosnia’s sporting director, Emir Spahic, announced that Ahmedhodzic would be permanently excluded from the national team.
Quote: “His actions are inexcusable and completely unfounded. By doing this, he has insulted everyone in this country. Calling him up again, whether soon or in the distant future, would be a huge insult to everyone who loves this country and its national team,” Spahic said.
The situation escalated to the point where even Ahmedhodzic's own father sided with the Bosnian Football Federation.
Before this, the player publicly criticized the team’s medical staff and announced his temporary refusal to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina, labeling their approach as "careless and amateurish."
Ahmedhodzic believes that the medical team’s negligence caused a relapse of his injury during a Euro 2024 qualifying match against Luxembourg.
Reminder: The 25-year-old defender has played 24 matches for Bosnia and Herzegovina, scoring one goal.
