Former controversial Manchester United player Mason Greenwood, who now plays for Marseille, may change his citizenship.
According to The Sun, the Jamaican Football Federation has sent an official request to the Football Association in England regarding Greenwood's switch to their national team. Jamaica first attempted to persuade Greenwood to change his citizenship last year, but the player declined at that time.
However, the appointment of Steve McClaren as Jamaica's head coach earlier this month has likely played a decisive role in Greenwood reconsidering his position. The former England manager, who is familiar with Greenwood from his time in Manchester United's coaching staff, managed to convince the player to take this step. Greenwood is eligible to represent Jamaica through his father, and FIFA rules allow him to change his citizenship despite having played for England.
For reference, Marseille paid €30 million for Greenwood’s transfer, and Manchester United is set to receive 50% of any future sale of the player.
