The English Premier League, long considered the strongest in the world, has just endured one of its most disastrous weeks in European competition history.
Details: Of the nine English representatives who took to the field in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League, only one club managed to secure a victory.
The main blow came in the Champions League, where three powerhouses suffered crushing defeats. Manchester City were routed 0-3 by Real Madrid in the Spanish capital, while Chelsea and Tottenham both conceded five goals, falling 2-5 to PSG and 2-5 to Atlético Madrid respectively. Liverpool also failed to pick up any points, losing 0-1 to Galatasaray. Only Arsenal and Newcastle managed to avoid defeat in Europe's top tournament, both grinding out 1-1 draws against Bayer Leverkusen and Barcelona.
In the Europa League, Aston Villa emerged as England's unlikely heroes. Unai Emery's side battled to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over French outfit Lille. Meanwhile, the other English representative in the tournament—Nottingham Forest—couldn't follow suit, narrowly losing 0-1 to Danish side Midtjylland.
The Conference League brought no relief. Crystal Palace, expected to deliver a confident performance, had to settle for a draw against Cypriot side AEK Larnaca. Despite being favorites, the Londoners couldn't break down their opponents and added just a single point to the English tally instead of three.
The week's final stats paint a grim picture: 1 win, 3 draws, and 5 defeats.
Reminder: Ousmane Dembélé could be on his way to the Premier League. The PSG player's agent has met with Manchester City representatives.
