Alisson was shown a yellow card for the challenge, while the decision stood. Morgan Gibbs-White then stepped up in the 70th minute and confidently converted the penalty, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and restoring Nottingham Forest's lead at 2-1.
The call immediately caused frustration around Anfield. The main point of debate is that Williams had already sent his attempt wide before the contact with Alisson. However, there was clear contact between the goalkeeper and the Forest player, meaning the controversy is more about whether the collision was enough to justify such a decisive punishment rather than whether contact occurred at all.
Liverpool supporters had another reason to be furious. That earlier episode made the later decision at the opposite end look even more painful for the hosts and sparked questions over the consistency of the refereeing threshold.
It is worth noting that Nottingham Forest initially took the lead through Dan Ndoye in the 24th minute before Alexander Isak equalised for Liverpool on 60 minutes.
