Spain, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez

Tenerife and Leganés will meet on Sunday, 13 September, in the fifth round of the Spanish Segunda, with kick-off at 21:00 CET. I am backing a goals market bet for this game.

H2H and statistical facts

  • Tenerife have suffered just one defeat in their last nine home matches.
  • Leganés are unbeaten in five consecutive matches.
  • Leganés have kept a clean sheet in their last three games.
  • Leganés have never beaten Tenerife away from home.
  • Only one goal has been scored in the last five meetings between these teams in Tenerife.

Tenerife began the new Segunda season with two consecutive victories and have seven points after four rounds. Álvaro Cervera's side started with a 3-1 away win over Eibar before narrowly beating Almería at home. They then lost 1-0 to Sporting Gijón, but in the previous round the islanders drew 1-1 with Real Sociedad B.

The opening matches of the championship have shown that Tenerife are capable of playing pragmatically. The team have scored five goals and conceded just three in four rounds. They looked particularly solid in their first two matches. At the same time, the defeat by Sporting was a reminder that the hosts can struggle to find space and create enough chances against well-organised opponents.

The latest draw with Real Sociedad B also left mixed impressions. Tenerife avoided a second consecutive defeat, but once again scored just one goal. Their attack therefore remains the main area for improvement. The hosts have good potential to be more productive, particularly on home soil.

Another factor in Tenerife's favour is the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López. The team have already beaten Almería there, while the support from the stands could help them withstand the pressure from one of the Segunda's leading sides. The head-to-head record on the island is also clearly in the hosts' favour: Leganés have never won here, suffering five defeats and drawing seven of their previous 12 visits.

Leganés, meanwhile, have made a very strong start to the season. After four rounds, the team have eight points and remain unbeaten. They drew 1-1 with Girona in the opening round before beating Real Oviedo and Eldense 1-0, then played out a goalless draw with Las Palmas in their most recent match. That record has put Leganés among the Segunda's leading sides.

Rubén Albés' team's defensive performance has been particularly impressive. Leganés have conceded just one goal in four rounds — in the opening match against Girona. Since then, the Madrid side have kept three consecutive clean sheets. The visitors have also been fairly cautious themselves, scoring just three goals in four rounds. The current Leganés side are therefore clearly relying not on open football, but on discipline, control of space and minimising mistakes.

The latest match against Las Palmas was a good illustration of this approach. Leganés not only kept a clean sheet but also looked more dangerous than the hosts, particularly in the second half. The visitors created chances and regularly threatened the opposition goal, but could not turn their advantage into a goal. As a result, they dropped two points despite producing enough to have expected more from the game.

The arrival of Álvaro Morata in the Leganés squad also deserves particular attention. The star striker was the club's major summer signing and made his debut against Las Palmas. His presence could significantly increase the Madrid side's attacking potential, particularly as the forward builds up his fitness and develops his understanding with his new team-mates.

What to bet on?

The upcoming encounter promises to be a very tight affair. Tenerife have home advantage and have historically been an extremely awkward opponent for Leganés, but the visitors arrive unbeaten and having conceded just one goal in four rounds. Given the cautious style of both teams and their low scoring rates, a high-scoring match is unlikely. I am therefore backing under 2.5 total goals.
