On paper, the Sixers have enough talent to compete with the Eastern Conference's best teams, but Nick Nurse's coaching staff will have to find a balance between several stars accustomed to having the ball in their hands.
Philadelphia won its first preseason meeting with the Knicks convincingly, 120-97. Brown scored 22 points in just 17 minutes, showing that he can quickly become one of the team's primary scoring options. Embiid, Maxey and James did not play in that game, however, meaning the result did not fully reflect the potential of the revamped starting lineup.
In their next exhibition games, the Sixers lost to Brooklyn 108-114 and suffered a heavy 106-144 defeat against Boston. In their final preseason outing, Philadelphia faced the Celtics again and lost in overtime, 120-125. Embiid scored 27 points, but the team could not protect its lead and close the preparation period with a victory.
The biggest question for the Sixers is how quickly their star-studded lineup will gel. James can take over playmaking duties and make life easier for his teammates, Brown will add physicality and scoring on the perimeter, while Maxey can push the pace. At the same time, Embiid's health remains the most important factor over the course of the season, while the newcomers must develop chemistry without sacrificing offensive efficiency.

The season opener promises to be a tense affair. New York has a well-established championship core, while Philadelphia can counter the hosts with more headline-grabbing additions and formidable offensive firepower. Neither team's preseason results were flawless, so defensive discipline, rebounding and the ability of the stars to avoid getting in each other's way on offense could prove decisive. Taking home-court advantage and greater chemistry into account, a slight edge ahead of the opening game can be given to the reigning champions. My pick is a Knicks win.
