Anfield comeback! Liverpool erase a 0-2 deficit before half-time
Liverpool produced a remarkable first-half comeback at Anfield.
Details: The Reds went two goals down against Villarreal in their Champions League clash, but managed to turn the situation around before the interval and head into the break with the score level at 2-2.
Villarreal stunned Anfield almost immediately. Georges Mikautadze opened the scoring in the fourth minute after capitalising on Virgil van Dijk's mistake, and Sergi Cardona doubled the visitors' advantage in the 29th minute after being released by Nathan Saliba.
Liverpool responded seven minutes later. Alexis Mac Allister met Kostas Tsimikas' delivery and headed the ball past Peter Gulacsi to make it 1-2. The hosts continued to push forward, and in the second minute of first-half stoppage time Ronald Araujo headed home after an assist from Rio Ngumoha, completing the comeback to 2-2.
The four-goal first half came in Liverpool's third match of the Champions League league phase. The Reds entered the game with six points after victories over Atletico Madrid and LASK, while Villarreal had collected three points from their opening two matches.
It is worth noting that Liverpool have already produced a comeback from 0-2 against Villarreal in the Champions League. In the 2022 semi-final second leg, the Spanish side led by two goals before the Reds scored three times after the break and won 3-2.
