Brighton & Hove Albion will host Lithuanian champions FK Kauno Žalgiris at the Amex Stadium on Thursday, October 15, in the opening round of the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League league phase. The English side enter the competition as one of the leading contenders, but their opponents have already demonstrated resilience against stronger European teams. Can the visitors keep the score respectable against an in-form Premier League side?

Brighton: Excellent domestic form despite injury concerns

Fabian Hürzeler's team have made an impressive start to the Premier League season. After six rounds, Brighton sit third in the standings with 13 points, just two behind Arsenal. Their attacking performances have been particularly encouraging, but the biggest improvement has come in defense.

Brighton have won four of their last five matches across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and conceding just three. Their latest Premier League results underline that momentum: a 5-0 demolition of Coventry, a convincing 3-0 victory over Arsenal, and a hard-fought 2-0 away win against Sunderland on October 10.

The victory at Sunderland was especially impressive because Brighton played more than half an hour with ten men following Pascal Struijk's dismissal. Nevertheless, the Seagulls defended confidently and secured their third consecutive Premier League clean sheet.

Pascal Groß continues to play an essential role in midfield, controlling possession and creating opportunities. Diego Gómez, Yasin Ayari and Charalampos Kostoulas offer additional attacking quality, while Maxim De Cuyper has become increasingly influential in the final third.

However, Hürzeler still has several personnel problems. Yankuba Minteh, Mats Wieffer and Kaoru Mitoma were unavailable according to the club's latest fitness update, while Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson remain sidelined. Lewis Dunk has returned to fitness, giving the manager another defensive option.

Brighton also have an encouraging European record at home, having won their last four UEFA home matches. Their 4-0 victory over Tromsø in Conference League qualifying provides another reminder of their ability to dominate less experienced opposition.

Kauno Žalgiris: Domestic success, but a major European challenge

Željko Sopić's side approach their first Conference League league-phase match in excellent spirits. The Lithuanian champions added another trophy to their collection on October 11, defeating Minija Kretinga 3-0 in the Lithuanian Cup final.

The result extended a productive sequence in which Kauno Žalgiris have won four of their last five competitive matches, scoring 13 goals. Their domestic performances have been impressive, including a 5-1 victory over Sūduva and a 2-0 away win against Šiauliai.

Gabriel Debeljuh and Leon Kreković both scored in the cup final and remain important attacking options. Amine Benchaib provides creativity, while experienced midfielders Vykintas Slivka and Anthony Kalik are responsible for maintaining balance.

However, facing Brighton represents a completely different level of opposition.

Kauno Žalgiris have already encountered serious difficulties against stronger European teams this season. They suffered a 5-0 away defeat against Dinamo Zagreb in Champions League qualifying before losing 3-0 at Beşiktaş in the Europa League play-offs.

To their credit, the Lithuanians responded by beating Beşiktaş 1-0 at home, although they still lost the tie 3-1 on aggregate.

These results suggest that Sopić's team can remain competitive when defending in an organized shape, but controlling matches against technically superior opposition is significantly more difficult.

At the Amex, the visitors are likely to adopt a compact defensive approach, prioritizing discipline and attempting to threaten Brighton through counterattacks and set pieces.

Possible lineups

  • Brighton: Verbruggen – Kadıoğlu, Vušković, Dunk, Boscagli – Chema Andrés, Groß – Gómez, Ayari, De Cuyper – Kostoulas.
  • Kauno Žalgiris: Mikelionis – Hernández, Kastrati, Konatar, Lekiatas – Slivka, Kalik – Kreković, Benchaib, Burba – Debeljuh.

Match facts and head-to-head record

  • Brighton have won four of their last five matches across all competitions, drawing the other.
  • Brighton have kept three consecutive clean sheets in the Premier League, winning those matches by a combined score of 10-0.
  • Brighton have won their last four UEFA home matches.
  • Kauno Žalgiris have won four of their last five competitive games.
  • Kauno Žalgiris lost 5-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb and 3-0 away to Beşiktaş during European qualifying.
  • The teams have never previously met in an official competitive match.

Brighton should dominate without necessarily producing a goal fest: match prediction

The difference in individual quality between the teams is substantial. Brighton have already demonstrated their ability to dismantle opponents through aggressive pressing, technical superiority and rapid attacking combinations.

However, a convincing home victory does not automatically mean an exceptionally high-scoring encounter.

Brighton's recent defensive performances have been outstanding, and Hürzeler may prefer a controlled approach rather than committing excessive numbers forward. The absence of several attacking options could also influence the team's efficiency.

Kauno Žalgiris, meanwhile, have shown enough discipline to suggest they will not simply surrender possession without resistance. Having suffered heavy defeats against stronger opposition in European qualifying, the Lithuanians are likely to prioritize defensive stability and avoid unnecessary risks.

Brighton should create enough opportunities to win comfortably, but a result such as 3-0 or 4-0 appears more plausible than an uncontrolled goal fest. With the hosts' defensive reliability and the visitors' expected cautious approach, backing a moderate overall goal total looks attractive.
