Sint-Truiden vs. Brann: a battle between two contenders for the Conference League knockout stage
On November 5, Sint-Truiden will host Norwegian side Brann in the third round of the Conference League league phase. Both teams won their opening two matches of the competition and collected six points, so the upcoming encounter promises to be a fascinating one. More than just another three points will be at stake: the winner will have a chance to establish themselves among the leaders in the overall standings and take another step toward reaching the next stage.
Sint-Truiden
The Belgian club has made an almost perfect start to its European campaign. In the opening round, Sint-Truiden defeated Tbilisi-based Iberia 2-0 at home before claiming an even more important away win over Danish side Midtjylland, 1-0.
The second result is particularly valuable, as the Danes are traditionally regarded as a difficult opponent, while the Belgians not only found the net but also kept a clean sheet.
As a result, the team has six points after two rounds and a goal difference of 3:0. In the domestic league, however, things have unfolded very differently. Sint-Truiden have lost their last five Belgian Pro League matches, including recent encounters with Club Brugge (2:3) and Oud-Heverlee Leuven (1:2).
The latest defeat proved especially painful. On November 2, the club announced the dismissal of head coach Frederik De Meijer.
His former assistant, Sepp De Rover, has been placed in temporary charge of the team. That means Sint-Truiden head into this crucial European fixture amid a coaching transition, which could affect both the players' cohesion and their psychological state.
Even so, the Belgians should not be written off. Their two European victories showed that the team possesses the necessary potential. The hosts' main strengths could be their organized play without the ball and their ability to exploit space after winning possession.
Brann
The Norwegians have also made an excellent start to the Conference League league phase. In the opening round, Brann defeated Lincoln Red Imps 2:1 before producing a genuine goal-scoring spectacle away to Kauno Žalgiris, winning 4:1. Six goals in two matches is a highly convincing return.

Unlike their upcoming opponents, Brann are still fighting for a place near the top of the domestic league as well. The team is capable of taking the initiative, using the flanks aggressively and putting pressure on the opposition penalty area. That said, the Norwegians cannot claim to be particularly consistent in defense either.
In their most recent league matches, the team lost to Lillestrøm (2:3) but then managed to restore their standing with the fans by beating Molde 3:2. This once again underlines Brann's attacking mindset: the team is eager to push forward, but after losing the ball, it sometimes leaves opponents too much space to exploit.
Among the Norwegians' strengths are their intensity, quick transitions from defense to attack and effective work down the flanks. If the visitors manage to impose their usual tempo, Sint-Truiden could face serious problems.
What should we expect from the match?
On paper, the matchup looks fairly even: both teams have six points and have yet to drop a single point in the Conference League. However, the circumstances heading into the game slightly alter the balance of power.
Sint-Truiden will have home advantage, but changing head coaches immediately before the match is far from an ideal situation. Brann, meanwhile, come into the encounter with a clearer playing structure and a positive attacking mindset. At the same time, the Belgians have already shown that they can defend effectively against strong opponents.
The teams have never met before, so the lack of an established pattern in this matchup adds another layer of intrigue. I think Brann will look to take advantage of the uncertainty in the hosts' camp and set a high tempo from the opening minutes. Sint-Truiden, for their part, must avoid becoming too attack-minded and leaving space behind their defenders. I have a slight preference for the visitors in this matchup.
The Norwegians look more stable in terms of their organization, while the coaching changes in the Belgian camp could become an additional risk factor.
The both-teams-to-score market is worth considering. Brann regularly create dangerous chances but are not always reliable defensively either, while Sint-Truiden are unlikely to give up their attacking initiative at home.
My prediction: both teams to score - yes.
