Can Rwanda extend their winning streak? Rwanda vs Kenya prediction — 05.10.2026
Rwanda
Kenya
Rwanda and Kenya will meet on Monday, October 5, 2026, in an international friendly at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, with kick-off scheduled for 18:00 local time. Stephen Constantine's side enter this East African derby with considerable momentum, while Benni McCarthy's Kenya are looking for a response after a difficult start to their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
Rwanda: four wins in a row and confidence is growing
The current international window has gone almost perfectly for the Amavubi. Rwanda opened their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign with a 3-1 home victory over Liberia before travelling to Cape Verde and winning 2-1. Six points from six have put Constantine's team in an excellent position in Group K and, just as importantly, given them a major confidence boost.
Those results extended Rwanda's winning run to four matches. Before the September qualifiers, they had beaten Grenada 4-0 and Estonia 2-0 in friendlies. Across those four victories, the Amavubi have scored 11 goals and conceded only twice.
Constantine also has a fairly settled core at his disposal. Fiacre Ntwari, Ange Mutsinzi, Phanuel Kavita and Claude Niyomugabo provide experience at the back, Djihad Bizimana remains an important figure in midfield, while Noam Emeran, Jojea Kwizera, Innocent Nshuti, Gilbert Mugisha and the Mickels brothers give the coach different attacking options. Elie Tatou Iradukunda was also added to the September group after Keddy Nsanzimfura withdrew.
The biggest positive is that Rwanda are currently finding different ways to win. They can take the initiative at Amahoro, but the victory in Cape Verde also showed that this team is capable of remaining disciplined without the ball and punishing opponents in transition.
Kenya: plenty of individual quality, but the latest results raise questions
Kenya's September-October window has been much less convincing. The Harambee Stars started AFCON qualifying with a 1-1 draw against Eritrea before losing 1-0 away to Guinea, where Serhou Guirassy scored the decisive goal in the first half. McCarthy's side therefore have just one point and one goal from their first two group matches.
There is less pressure on Kenya in terms of qualification because they are already guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as one of the three co-hosts alongside Tanzania and Uganda. For McCarthy, these fixtures are therefore also an opportunity to build a team and establish the core of the squad he wants for the tournament.
The personnel available to Kenya should not be underestimated. Captain Michael Olunga remains the most experienced attacking figure, while Timothy Ouma, Duke Abuya, Manzur Okwaro, Ryan Ogam, Job Ochieng and Micah Obiero provide a mixture of physicality, mobility and technical quality. Ryan Ogam has already made an impact during this window, scoring the late equalizer against Eritrea.
However, Kenya have not yet turned that individual quality into consistent attacking football. Facing a Rwanda side that is confident, organized and playing at home represents another difficult test.
Match facts and head-to-head record
Rwanda come into the game on a four-match winning streak with an aggregate score of 11-2. Kenya are winless in their first two AFCON 2027 qualifiers, scoring once and conceding twice. The teams last met twice during the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign: they drew 1-1 in Kigali before Kenya won the return fixture 2-1.
Home momentum can make the difference
The friendly status of the game naturally increases the possibility of rotation and experimentation, but the contrast in current momentum is difficult to ignore. Rwanda are playing with confidence, have become more productive in attack and have conceded only two goals during their four-match winning streak.
Kenya have enough individual quality to make this competitive, especially if Olunga and the other senior attacking players receive significant minutes. Still, McCarthy's team have struggled to turn possession and attacking potential into goals in their first two qualifiers.
With the match taking place at Amahoro Stadium, Rwanda should have another important advantage. Constantine's team currently look more settled, and their ability to play both proactively and on the counter should give them opportunities against a Kenyan side still searching for its best balance. A narrow home victory, with 1-0 or 2-1 among the most plausible scorelines, looks like the most attractive scenario.
Prediction: Rwanda to win.
