Durban City will host Stellenbosch at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday, September 1, in the fifth round of the South African Premiership. The teams are separated by just one point after four matches: Durban City sit eighth with five points, while Stellenbosch are 11th with four. The hosts arrive after finally recording their first league victory of the season, whereas the visitors are looking for a response after another narrow defeat.

Durban City: defensive stability is becoming the foundation

Khalil Ben Youssef had to wait until the fourth round for his first Premiership win as Durban City head coach, but the 2-0 victory away to Kruger United was an important step forward. Jean Lwamba opened the scoring in the seventh minute before Gaston Sirino doubled the advantage shortly after half-time. Goalkeeper Frederick Asare also played his part, producing several important saves when Kruger attempted to get back into the contest.

The result continued a clear early-season trend. Durban City have conceded only twice across their first four league matches: they lost 0-1 to Sekhukhune United before drawing 0-0 with Golden Arrows and 1-1 with Richards Bay, then kept another clean sheet against Kruger United. Both of their league fixtures at Chatsworth this season have therefore been low-scoring affairs.

There is also increasing continuity in Ben Youssef's selection. Against Kruger, the coach used Asare behind a back four of Bandile Shandu, Liam De Kock, Siyabonga Msomi and John Mokone, with Brooklyn Poggenpoel and Tylo Sanger helping protect the central areas. Samkelo Maseko, Kyle Jurgens and Sirino supported Lwamba further forward. It is a structure designed first to keep the team compact, and so far it has made Durban City difficult to break down.

Stellenbosch: attacking talent remains, but the new-look side is inconsistent

Stellenbosch have experienced a much more volatile start. Gavin Hunt's team opened with a 0-1 defeat to AmaZulu, then produced six goals across a 3-3 draw with Polokwane City and a 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants. Quwan Plaatjies was the hero against Gallants, scoring a hat-trick on his professional debut. However, that attacking momentum disappeared in the latest round as Stellenbosch lost 0-1 away to Golden Arrows.

The squad is still adapting after significant changes in attack. Langelihle Phili, one of last season's leading performers, completed a permanent move to Kaizer Chiefs, while Devin Titus departed for MAS Fès after becoming Stellenbosch's second-highest scorer in club history. At the same time, Ashley Du Preez has returned and experienced striker Bradley Grobler has joined the club, giving Hunt alternatives alongside Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Plaatjies.

The defeat to Golden Arrows highlighted why the rebuilding process may need time. Stellenbosch created opportunities in the first half but were unable to score, conceded from Sede Junior Dion's header in the 70th minute and failed to produce a convincing response despite introducing Du Preez, Grobler and Genino Palace from the bench.

Probable lineups

There are no confirmed starting elevens yet, so the safest projection is based primarily on the teams used in the latest league matches.

  • Durban City: Asare – Shandu, De Kock, Msomi, Mokone – Poggenpoel, Sanger – Maseko, Jurgens, Sirino – Lwamba.
  • Stellenbosch: Stephens – Taunyana, Nkwali, Vena, Mashego – Mthethwa – Plaatjies, Matlou, Butsaka, Daniels – Kwayiba.

Match facts and head-to-heads

  • Durban City have conceded only two goals in their first four Premiership matches.
  • Both Durban City home league matches this season have finished with no more than two goals.
  • Stellenbosch have failed to score in two of their four league games, including their latest 0-1 defeat to Golden Arrows.
  • The two league meetings between these teams last season both finished 0-0: Stellenbosch 0-0 Durban City on September 24, 2025, and Durban City 0-0 Stellenbosch on May 8, 2026.

Another fine-margin battle looks likely

The temptation is to expect Stellenbosch's attacking options to eventually make the difference, but their early-season performances have been too inconsistent to trust them away from home. Hunt possesses plenty of individual quality, yet his new-look side is still searching for balance, while the latest defeat against Golden Arrows showed that possession and attacking depth do not necessarily translate into goals.

Durban City, meanwhile, appear increasingly comfortable playing controlled matches. Ben Youssef's side have not created huge numbers of chances, but their defensive organization has already produced two clean sheets and only two goals conceded in four league rounds.

The head-to-head record strengthens the case for another closely contested encounter. Neither team managed to score in either meeting last season, and the current circumstances once again suggest very little separates them. A 0-0 or 1-1 scoreline would not be surprising, making the draw the most attractive outcome.
